Morningstar Baptist Missionary Church was founded in a store front on Maple Avenue by Reverend James B. Ellis in 1935. In that same year, with only 20 members, Rev. Ellis purchased land and built MorningStar Baptist Church where it now stands, 419 Cates Avenue. During his fourteen years he established the standard organizations of the church, to include the usher board, missionary circle and deacon board. Upon his death in 1951, the assistant pastor, Reverend Willie White led the church until the arrival of the second pastor, Reverend Fitzgerald D. Fuller. Under Rev. Fuller’s leadership, MorningStar began to grow. A youth department was formed, an outdoor baptismal pool was added and the church was bricked. Reverend Fuller became too ill to continue his pastoral services and the assistant pastor, Reverend William Holt continued with the services of the church. With the death of Rev. Fuller in 1974, Reverend Herbert M. Pettiford became the third pastor.
During Rev. Pettiford’s leadership of nine years, the church continued to grow. Carpet was added, the youth choir was organized and youth membership reach it’s highest. A bible program for high school graduates was also started. Rev. Pettiford resigned in 1983, Reverend Rainey Enoch became the fourth pastor of MorningStar.
Under the guidance of Rev. Enoch, the church was remodeled and installed an indoor baptismal pool, a fellowship hall was added, extra bathrooms were built, a new roof added, a GED program was set-up and a handicap ramp was built. Rev. Enoch resigned in 1991.
In 1992, the fifth pastor of MorningStar, Dr. Michael L. Enzlow was installed. During Dr. Enzlow’s pastorship, the church membership grew. A church van was purchased, the Brighter Star building fund was formed and a drill team was organized. The Officers in Training program was established, with the purpose of training new members for the Trustee and Deacon Board. A church directory committee was formed to organize member’s addresses and telephone numbers. A radio broadcast and a music ministry was incorporated. The “Witnessing Warriors” were established, whose purpose was to reach out to the community to spread the gospel of the Lord. The purchase of land was also completed under Dr. Enzlow’s leadership. Dr. Enzlow died in June 1993.
In 1993, the sixth and present pastor, Reverend Terry L. Young, began his pastoralship of MorningStar. Under Pastor Young’s leadership more land was purchased. The membership grew tremendously and a new church organ was added. The Inspiritual and The Fellowship Mass Choirs were formed and many new ministries evolved. These ministries included: My Sister’s Love (a women’s fellowship whose purpose is to teach and minister God’s Word and support to all sisters in Christ), My Brother’s Keeper (a men’s fellowship class who purpose is to teach, bond and strengthen the men for the Glory of God), Crossroads Ministry (for youth ages 10-17), the children’s ministry was included in children’s church service on Sundays and bible study on Wednesdays.
The Senior’s ministry, a praise team, noonday bible study and PUSH (Pray Until Something Happens), an intercessory prayer group, were all formed. The membership of MorningStar really began to take off and continued to grow very rapidly. The youth and young adult membership also grew as they became a very integral part of the church. A new church van was purchased and a new edifice was built. The new edifice contained an educational wing with a computer lab to assist with the tutoring committee with was also formed under Pastor Young’s leadership. Another new organ was added, a computer system, three new ministries, a Deaconess Board, New Convert’s Class and a 47 passenger charter bus.
He was consecrated to the office of Bishop in October of 2006. Bishop Young’s vision is to build a Family Life Center, Senior Housing Project, Day Care and Afterschool Program and a Troubled Youth Facility. Bishop has also set up the Kingdom Connections Ministry which will bring ministries from all areas together to work as one body to uplift and glorify the kingdom of God. To this date, Bishop Young is still doing kingdom building and taking God’s people to a higher spiritual realm. The ministry still continues to expand and God continues to bless the Angel of this house as he leads and guides in his pastoralship.
